The Refresher

I have been on a smoothie kick lately and this one just has to be shared.  It was really wonderful!  This made enough for my son and me, so I would double or even triple it if the rest of the kids wanted some, too.

The Refresher
4-inch piece cucumber, cut in half
1 ripe banana
1/2 cup fresh mango, pineapple and papaya chunks
1 cup spinach, kale and chard leaves
1/2 cup coconut water
1/2 unsweetened almond milk
1 scoop Orgain vanilla protein powder
1/2 tsp Great Lakes kosher gelatin
3 ice cubes

Makes about 4 cups

Smoothie Of The Good For You

I made this smoothie recipe, which I saw on my Facebook wall, today.  We tried it and liked it, despite the unusual spices. I asked the youngest kids what we should call it, and they decided it was "The Smoothie Of The Good For You".  Silly blokes.

The Smoothie Of The Good For You

1 cup yogurt
1 cup water
1/2 cup ice cubes
1 cup pineapple
1 banana
1 Tbsp coconut oil (I used expeller-pressed)
1/2 tsp turmeric
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp ginger
1 tsp chia seed
1 tsp kelp granules

Blend well and serve.

Homemade Creamsicle Popsicles

This recipe came through on my facebook wall.  I make a smoothie similar to this, but not exact.  My kids, and the neighborhood kids, LOVE homemade popsicles on a hot day.

Homemade Orange Creamsicles

1 cup orange juice (fresh or frozen), 1 cup heavy cream, 3 TSP honey, 1/4 tsp orange extract, 1/2 tsp vanilla extract Whisk all ingredients together. Pour mixture into popsicle molds. Let set for 30-60 minutes, then add popsicle sticks. Freeze for another 4-6 hours or until frozen. When ready to serve, run warm water along popsicle mold to loosen the popsicles.

The Green Monstah Smoothie

I found this recipe at A Moderate Life. and adapted it slightly.

The Green Monstah Smoothie

1 frozen very ripe banana
1 cup mixed frozen berries
1 cup frozen pineapple, papaya or mango, or a combination of the three
1 apple
1 carrot
1 small piece ginger, peeled
1 stalk celery
1/2 cucumber with skin on
1 cup sprouts if you have them
1 cup dark leafy greens like kale, chard, arugula or romaine lettuce***remember to alternate greens over a few days as they contain compounds that can affect your health if eaten in concentration over many days
2 tablespoons whole flax seed
1 tablespoon coconut oil
1 tablespoon coconut shreds

Cut veggies and fresh fruits and place in the blender--add seeds and oil. Add 1/2 cup filtered water and start blending on slow--then turn to high--when that portion is blended--add in the frozen ingredients a bit at a time and blend--adding water as necessary to keep the blender working. Pour and enjoy!

I also add 2-3 prunes or pitted dates to add texture and fiber and sweetness
Wheatgrass juice powder for more vitamins and minerals
2-4 tablespoons of whole fat organic plain yogurt for protein.
1 tablespoon of chia seeds for extra omega-3 fatty acids and fiber...

Green To Go Smoothie

Many of you know of "Above Rubies" (www.aboverubies.org), the wonderful free magazine about homemaking, parenting, and all those other interests that we all share. I got this recipe from there. We drink this (or another green variation) on a nearly daily basis, and have all learned to love it-even the one who hated it at first!!!

"Green To Go"

1 ripe banana

2 cups purified water

1 Tbsp. honey (raw and local is best)

2 Tbsp. flaxseed oil or coconut oil

a handful of ice

a blender full of greens

Blend in a good blender (I have a Blend-Tec) on high for 30 seconds, then max for 30 seconds, then high again for a few seconds until smooth.

When beginning this great drink, you can use fewer greens and a little more fruit. Add more veggies a little at a time as your family adjusts to the taste. We use whatever fruit is on hand, apples, pears, berries, etc. and whatever greens we have as well, romaine, spinach, red-leaf lettuce, etc. I like the organic salad greens mixture from Costco. I also add a Tbsp. or two of powdered spirulina when I have some.

Kefir Smoothie

Simple Kefir Smoothie

12 oz. frozen juice concentrate, any flavor (we love this with simple orange juice!)
4 cups kefir or raw milk
up to 1/2 cup sweetener (rapadura, etc.) to taste. (We don't find any needed with most juices. OJ needs about 1/2 cup)
2 cups water
2 tsp. vanilla
2 cups ice cubes

Add to blender and blend 30 seconds until smooth. When you use OJ, this tastes just like an Orange Julius!

Pear Breakfast Drink

Pear Breakfast Drink
2 pears
1 apple
1 banana
1 carrot, chunked
2 Tbsp honey
2 tsp vanilla
1 cup OJ
2 cups water
1 cup ice
a sprinkle of cinnamon
a squirt of flax seed oil or coconut oil(optional, but yummy)

Put all ingredients in your blender (I recommend getting a Blend-Tec or VitaMix), and blend until smooth. Serve.

Orange Lemonade

Orange Lemonade
In your blender combine:

6 cups of water
3/4 cup sugar or honey
2 peeled oranges
2 peeled lemons

Whir for 30 seconds on 10, then on high for 30 more seconds.

If you want, add some ice for a colder, thicker smoothie.
